The San Juan Mountains, Colorado
Instead of heading back to Silverton past the ski area, from the top of Corkscrew we continued to head up and over Hurricane Pass. Hurricane Pass short trail, but it connected Corkscrew Gulch with California Gulch, dropping down to beautiful Lake Como. Some light snow on the switchbacks coming up California Pass had me pretty nervous, but it turned out to be fine and completely unfounded. Although narrow at points while switchbacking along shelfs, California Gulch was a piece of cake; A dirt road more than jeep trail. At 12,960′ at the top of California Pass, the 360º views were absolutely stunning as we were looked down on Lake Como, across to the switchbacks heading up Hurricane Pass, and right down California Gulch towards the ghost town of Animas Forks.
And as we dropped to the valley floor in the gulch, I found some nice ponds to set up and play around… in the mid-day sun.
