Courthouse Towers Sunset

Courthouse Towers Sunset
Arches National Park, Utah

After realizing we couldn’t make it to Canyonlands in time for sunset, we were hoping to at least get some shots in Castle Valley on the way to camp. The sky was flat gray and looking really bleak as we drove down Route 128 on our way in to Moab. We had already succumbed to the realization nothing there wasn’t going to be any colors to be had that night…

Just as we pulled in to town at the intersection of 191, there was a small glimmer of hope in the sky – A little bit of light on the horizon and a small glow on the bottom of the clouds. I just had a feeling about this one and luckily having spent so much time down there, I knew out best bet for some shots was to quickly get in to Arches National Park, fly up the switchbacks, and get to the La Sal Mountains viewpoint. We didn’t have time to get anywhere else and from that viewpoint, we’d be able to shoot the La Sals (if it lit up to the east…) or northwest over the Courthouse Towers. Really 360º views, which I could make work if the sky were to explode like we were now hoping.

We were not disappointed…
