The Elusive Fancy Lake in the Holy Cross Wilderness

The Elusive Fancy Lake
Holy Cross Wilderness, Colorado

Fancy Lake – Well, maybe not so “elusive” at all, but we didn’t find it a few weeks ago. We didn’t get to the trailhead off Homestake Road in the Holy Cross Wilderness until 6:30, but I had read that it was only 2 miles into the lake (I just found that same site again…) so time wasn’t a problem. The trail is pretty mellow and follows Fancy Creek the whole way, but after 2.5 miles, we still hadn’t found any lake and the trail meandered across a bridge-less creek into a snowfield just below tree line. We got over the creek, but couldn’t pick up the trail again. Seeing an opening at the top of a steep 50ft rocky hill, we clambered up to not find a lake, but a beautiful field with wildflowers and the convergence of three streams.

We gave up there. It was getting dark and since we had gone 2.5 out of 2 miles, we assumed we somehow just missed the lake. Still nice lil’ hike though.
