Nong Khiaw, Laos
Nong Khiaw (Muang Ngoi), Laos was peaceful to say the least. Situated right along the banks of the Nam Ou River, it’s a dusty, sleepy market town engrossed in luscious green jungles with limestone mountains towering a thousand feet overhead. Other than the sheer beauty and the back-in-time authentic atmosphere, there didn’t seem to be much there. What few backpackers do come in typically breeze on through on their way to Muang Ngoi Neua giving Nong Khai the impression of being off the main tourist trail. There are seemingly few guest houses and restaurants around, but still enough infrastructure and kind locals to make it an easily manageable and relaxing visit.
I’ve never sweat as profusely as when we cruised around on some mountain bikes for and hour or two in the morning, but overall, we mainly just lounged and ate for the day we were there. Thinking about it, if I were to ever get back, I’d plan on a few days in a hammock reading a book on a (spider-proof) bungalow porch just staring up at the peaks.
