The San Juan Skyway & the Million Dollar Highway
San Juan Mountains, Colorado

The San Juan Skyway traverses the heart of the San Juan Mountains in southwestern Colorado forming a 232 mile (373 km) loop designated as an All-American Road, a National Forest Scenic Byway, a Colorado Scenic & Historical Byway, and a route that is constantly touted as “America’s Most Beautiful Drive” The skyway travels over four different mountain passes, winding through five million acres of the San Juan and Uncompahgre National Forests that encompass the largest and most rugged peaks that Colorado has to offer.

There’s no ‘right way’ to travel the loop, but coming from the north, I began in Ridgeway, heading west on Route 62, over Last Dollar Road, and then south on Route 145 from Lizard Head Pass. After an uncomfortable night atop the pass, I continued the loop….
