A Pit Stop at Goosenecks State Park
Monument Valley, Utah

I had never heard of Goosenecks State Park and I don’t even remember how I ended up finding out about it. It’s right in Monument Valley above the Arizona border on Route 163 and since we were heading through there on our way from the Grand Canyon and Moab, we decided the 11 mile detour was something we could handle. The park pretty much has nothing there – no facilities, no hiking trails, and no access to the river. There’s technically campsites and a picnic area, but saying that they’re “developed” is an overstatement.

Goosenecks State Park overlooks the San Juan River where over the distance of one and a half miles, the river  meanders more than six miles as it makes a series of tight turns (goosenecks) 1,000 feet below the canyon rim. The overlook is really impressive and considering I had just watched the sunrise at Mather Point in the Grand Canyon that morning, that’s saying a lot.
